Premier Birdwatching in Southwest Louisiana: Top Lake Charles Hotspots
Photos by Arlene Vidaurri Cain
Southwest Louisiana is a birdwatcher's paradise, recognized as one of America's Top 10 Birding Destinations for its incredible diversity. Home to over 400 bird species, the region sees a surge in populations during fall, winter, and spring as hundreds of thousands migrate along the Central and Mississippi Flyways.
Discover prime birding locations like the Creole Nature Trail, an 180-mile All-American Road dubbed Louisiana's Outback. Key hotspots include Sabine National Wildlife Refuge, Peveto Woods Bird Sanctuary, Rutherford Beach, and Pintail Wildlife Drive. Venture east on Hwy 14 to Lacassine National Wildlife Refuge, or explore Sam Houston Jones State Park near Moss Bluff for exceptional sightings.
David Booth, First Vice President of Programs for the Gulf Coast Bird Club, highlights recent exciting species. Sandhill Cranes have grown significantly over the past two decades, spotted in Lake Charles, Iowa, and Carlyss. "I recently saw 300-400 in fields south of Iowa," Booth notes. "They're also common east of Lake Charles Municipal Airport along farm roads like Natalie Rd. They winter here, departing in February or March and returning in fall."

Bald eagles are thriving in Southwest Louisiana, frequently seen along rivers at Sam Houston Jones State Park and in South Lake Charles.
Seek out Tundra Swans at Cameron National Wildlife Refuge on Hwy 27. Spot diverse ducks on the easy 3-mile Pintail Wildlife Drive loop with its marsh boardwalk. Rare scoters and possibly a Long-tailed Duck appear along the coast west of Holly Beach in Cameron Parish. The vibrant kiskadee has been observed at Sam Houston Jones State Park.

The Gulf Coast Bird Club invites all enthusiasts, including visitors, to monthly meetings on the second Thursday from September to May. Field trips follow the next Saturday to seasonal hotspots. Join the monthly Beginner’s Bird Walk at Sam Houston Jones State Park on the fourth Saturday at 8 a.m., often spotting 25-30 local species.
