Kayaking in Lake Charles: Top Waterways, Rentals, Spots & Expert Tips
Southwest Louisiana boasts an abundance of waterways—shimmering lakes, meandering rivers, mysterious bayous, cypress swamps, and salt grass marshes—all perfect for boating. From sailboats and motorboats to bass boats, fishing trawlers, and pirogues, options abound. But for an intimate adventure, nothing beats kayaking!

Kayaks access narrow inlets and shallow waters inaccessible to larger vessels. The leisurely pace lets you soak in southwest Louisiana's stunning scenery, with only the gentle swish of your paddle disturbing the peace. This quiet approach keeps wildlife undisturbed, offering prime views of birds, alligators, turtles, and more in their natural habitats.
Back in my home state of Pennsylvania, kayaking seemed risky and fast-paced—not for me. But since moving to Lake Charles in 2007, I've embraced the calm waters here. Eager to start but unsure how, I found the perfect entry point.

Pelican Paddlers
The Pelican Paddlers, a welcoming local group, introduced me to kayaking. They covered kayak types, techniques, rescue skills, and invited me on outings. They even loaned boats until I found my ideal match.
The group meets Wednesdays at 6 p.m. (during Daylight Saving Time, weather permitting) at the I-210 Bridge kayak launch.
Kayak Rentals
For rentals, try Paddle Up Lake Charles, Lake Area Adventures, or Lloyd’s Country Store. Paddle Up and Lake Area Adventures also offer guided tours.
Purchasing a Kayak
Local shops like Ship to Shore on Lake Street provide expert advice. Other options include Dick’s Sporting Goods, Academy Sports, and West Marine. Key considerations: sit-on-top vs. sit-inside? Workout paddles (10-15 miles) or leisurely fishing? Research, consult experts, and demo models—fit and comfort are crucial. Quality kayaks are worth the investment.
Best Paddling Spots
Southwest Louisiana offers endless kayaking venues—some locals launch from their backyards. Top spots: West Fork of the Calcasieu River from Sam Houston Jones State Park or Holbrook Park; Indian Bayou (near Sam Houston Jones); Nelson Road marsh; Prien Lake Park; Bayou d’Inde. For dolphins, try the Cameron Parish ship channel near the ferry. More boat launches.
