Spring has sprung in Southwest Louisiana, making it the perfect time to grab your bike and explore the great outdoors around Lake Charles!
One standout spot for cyclists is Sam Houston Jones State Park, a haven for outdoor lovers with its scenic, shaded trails of varying lengths. View the trail map here. Entry is just $3 per person.

For a longer adventure, head to the Creole Nature Trail. Local triathlete John O’Donnell suggests the stretch through Cameron Prairie National Wildlife Refuge: “There are wide bike lanes, and you’ll spot birds, alligators, and wildlife galore. Beginners can park at Chesson’s Grocery, ride to Gibbstown Bridge and back, passing Pintail Wildlife Drive.”

Upcoming events include the 27th Annual Tour LaFitte on Saturday, May 6, starting and finishing at the Lake Charles Civic Center. Choose from 10, 27, 40, 50, or 62.5-mile routes, with a commemorative t-shirt and water bottle for all riders. Details at www.tourlafitte.com.

The Slow Spokes Biking Social group hosts casual community rides, ideal for socializing and discovering Lake Charles. Their recent St. Patrick’s Day ride started at MacFarlane’s Celtic Pub and ended at the Lake Charles Civic Center for Live at the Lakefront. Follow their Facebook page for updates.

Southern Bicycle Co. (615 E. Prien Lake Rd.) leads group rides Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 7 a.m. Arrive 15 minutes early. Tuesdays feature fast and moderate groups; Saturdays offer 20-75 miles at 16-24 mph in up to three groups. Check their Facebook page for details.
