Discover Lake Charles Craft Beer and Spirits: A Local's Guide to Backyard Gems
It wouldn’t be Louisiana without exceptional craft beers and handcrafted spirits to complement our adventures. Small, independent breweries and distilleries have revolutionized the bar scene nationwide, spawning craft trails as a new tourism trend. Lake Charles proudly joins this movement.
Hometown Spirits and Brews
I admire businesses that draw inspiration from local history to build their brands. Crying Eagle Brewing Company, named after the legendary Atakapa Indian Chief, burst onto the scene with bold brews and a laid-back vibe. Their award-winning beers, like the exotic Belgian Single “Ready to Mingle”—spicy yet light and refreshing—have earned medals and loyal fans. Don’t miss their crisp rice lager, “Louisiana Lager,” celebrating our state’s favorite grain and pairing perfectly with Louisiana cuisine.

Louisiana also boasts the nation’s largest privately owned rum distillery, just a 20-minute drive east of downtown Lake Charles in Lacassine. At Louisiana Spirits and Bayou Rum, the sweet aroma of molasses welcomes visitors to the airy gift shop. Free tours begin with a video in the Viewing Room highlighting local sugarcane farmers, then proceed to the distillation area where 100% Louisiana sugarcane is transformed via traditional copper pot stills. End with complimentary tastings of four distinct flavors at the polished cypress bar.

Supporting local innovation, I visited Yellowfin Vodka Distillery in Sulphur upon its opening. Owner and distiller Jamison Trouth, a Sulphur native, detailed how he crafts smooth, bright vodka from 100% Louisiana sugarcane. Available exclusively at the distillery, it’s a must-visit for unique, homegrown spirits.
