9 Must-Visit Reasons for an Unforgettable Lake Charles Road Trip
As a lifelong resident of Southwest Louisiana, I've explored the world but always return home to Lake Charles. While New Orleans rightfully captivates visitors, Louisiana offers so much more. Just a two-hour drive from Baton Rouge and Houston, Lake Charles is perfect for an epic road trip. Here are nine of my top recommendations to experience the heart of Southwest Louisiana (SWLA):
1. Zydeco Brunch at Sloppy’s Downtown
Lake Charles boasts incredible breakfast and brunch spots, but for a lively bon temps experience, head to Sloppy’s Downtown on Saturday mornings from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Savor local favorites like shrimp and grits, open-faced oyster po'boys, and boudin beignets, accompanied by zydeco music that’ll have you dancing in your seat. Arrive early—tables and the dance floor fill up fast.
2. Mardi Gras Museum of Imperial Calcasieu

Louisiana’s Mardi Gras draws thousands with its dazzling costumes, doubloons, beads, and zydeco beats. Dive deeper into its history and traditions at Lake Charles’ Mardi Gras Museum, home to Louisiana’s second-largest celebration and the world’s largest collection of Mardi Gras costumes. It’s an essential stop for any SWLA road trip.
3. Creole Nature Trail All-American Road
This scenic 200-mile byway, including 26 miles along the Gulf Coast, is Louisiana’s Outback—a wetland paradise with 28 mammal species, 35 reptiles and amphibians, 132 fish varieties, and over 400 bird species. Start in Sulphur at Adventure Point for expert tips on birdwatching, crabbing, and the best photo spots as the trail loops from Sulphur to the Gulf, Rutherford Beach, and back to Lake Charles.
4. Eat at Darrell’s

Locals rave about the Darrell’s Special po’boy: piled high with ham, turkey, roast beef, house-made jalapeño mayo, and gravy. It demands a hearty appetite and plenty of napkins, but it’s worth every bite.
5. Yellowfin Vodka Distillery

Supporting local innovation, I toured Yellowfin Vodka Distillery with owner Jamison Trouth, a Sulphur native. Made from 100% locally grown cane sugar, this craft spirit shines. Enjoy a free tour, tasting, and grab a bottle. Follow them on Facebook and Instagram for updates.
6. Delta Downs Racetrack and Casino
Feel the thrill of live horse racing from October to April (Thoroughbreds) and April to July (Quarter Horses) at Louisiana’s premier track. Grandstands offer stunning views of the six-furlong track, pond, and barns. Check calendars for special events.
7. Crying Eagle Brewing Company
Named after an Atakapa chief, this brewery delivers award-winning beers with SWLA flair. Seasonals rotate, but staples like the spicy Belgian Single “Ready to Mingle” and crisp rice lager “Louisiana Lager” pair perfectly with local cuisine.
8. Catch a Festival

As Louisiana’s Festival Capital with over 75 events yearly, Lake Charles shines year-round. Spring: Black Heritage Festival, DeQuincy Railroad Days, Louisiana Pirate Festival. Summer: Cajun Food & Music Festival, Downtown at Sundown. Fall: Stars and Stripes Classic Car Show, Boudin Wars.
9. Bayou Rum
Twenty minutes east in Lacassine, tour the nation’s largest private rum distillery. Made from 100% Louisiana sugarcane via copper pot stills, enjoy a free tour, video on local farmers, and tasting of four flavors at the cypress bar.
