Why Traveling India Transforms Lives: My Eye-Opening Journey
“India will change you forever,” I heard repeatedly when we announced our trip. “Really?” I wondered skeptically. Having backpacked through Central America and Southeast Asia—witnessing extreme poverty, chaotic cities, violence, child beggars in Guatemala, limping strays in Nicaragua, and overt sex tourism in Cambodia—I thought little could shock me.
Yet nothing prepares you for India. The assault of intense aromas, cows wandering busy highways amid chaos, relentless honking traffic, hundreds of homeless sleeping on sidewalks, and even visible dead bodies overwhelm the senses. Heart-wrenching encounters with ancient-looking women begging with pleading palms or barefoot village kids in underwear on dirt roads hit hard.
India is intense and demanding. You might think you’re prepared, but it will floor you.
Don’t get me wrong—I didn’t hate it; I fell in love with traveling India. Amid the stray animals, beggars, grueling train rides, and visible deformities, the rewards shine: diverse landscapes from northern deserts and mountains to Goa’s tropical beaches and Hampi’s lunar terrain. Ornate temples, flavor-packed cuisine, and warm hospitality captivated me.
Some travelers dislike the stares or hair-touching, but I cherished meeting large families. Women in vibrant saris, henna tattoos, bindis, and golden jewelry fascinated me as much as my blonde hair intrigued them. Timid smiles, curious gazes, and broken-English chats about our lives created unforgettable bonds.
India reshaped my view of life’s basics. I can’t complain anymore—I’m grateful for my privileged life and passport-free travel. In Hampi, Hindu pilgrims who saved lifetimes for their sacred journey slept on streets eating cheap food, shaming my gripes over a thin $3/night mattress. Many lack running water or solid floors; women haul buckets from wells for chores.
Crushed on an overcrowded “cattle class” train—one friend in tears—I realized millions endure this daily. People washed in filthy rivers alongside bathing elephants, as it’s their only option.
No more whining about no hot water. India makes you cherish running water, flush toilets, tap-safe drinking, comfy beds, and appliances. It reframes complaints as trivial. I returned transformed and can’t wait to return—braving the challenges yields life’s most profound travel memories.
