Museo de las Culturas de Oaxaca: Premier Showcase of Oaxaca's Timeless Heritage

Plan for at least two hours to fully experience the Museo de las Culturas de Oaxaca, nestled in the historic monastery buildings adjacent to the Templo de Santo Domingo. Widely regarded as one of Mexico's top regional museums, it masterfully traces Oaxaca's history and cultures from pre-Hispanic origins to today, underscoring enduring traditions in crafts, medicine, and cuisine.
A stunning stone cloister welcomes visitors to the exhibits. The highlight is the extraordinary Mixtec treasure from Tomb 7 at Monte Albán, displayed in Room III (first room upstairs on the right). From the 14th century, it comprises a Mixtec king's burial with sacrificed attendants in a reused Zapotec tomb, featuring exquisite silver, turquoise, coral, jade, amber, pearls, carved bone, crystal goblets, a turquoise-mosaic skull, and abundant gold. Discovered in 1932 by archaeologist Alfonso Caso.
Halls I-IV explore the pre-Hispanic period, V-VIII the colonial era, IX-XIII independence and beyond, and XIV details the Santo Domingo Monastery. Beyond Hall IX, glass doors reveal the ornate choir of the Templo de Santo Domingo.
