Explore San Luis Potosí: A Journey Through Mexico's Baroque Heritage

A historical walkThe city of San Luis Potosí is one of the Mexican destinations with the greatest wealth of baroque architecture. A simple stroll through its elegant historical center showcases the old manors carved out of pink quarry that lined the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro (Royal Inland Road). This so-called cultural itinerary was used to transport silver from Zacatecas, Guanajuato, and San Luis Potosí, as well as to import mercury from Europe. In 2010, it was designated a World Heritage Site) by UNESCO.
The most beautiful hotels in San Luis Potosí are clustered in its historical center. The most traditional of these is the Palacio de San Agustín which is more of a living museum, transporting you back to the 17th century, than it is a hotel. Its decoration features certified antiquities from France, Germany, and Italy dating back between 200 and 600 years. Another attraction it offers are carriage rides through the historical center.
Out the innumerable places you can visit in San Luis Potosí, museums stand out; the Leonora Carrington is notable among these. The museum's collection features the English artist's sculptures, jewels, and unpublished sketches. The building that houses the Leonora Carrington Museum shares its space with the National Center for the Arts. The Federico Silva Museum is another mandatory place to visit, as he was the artist who designed the most imposing works of art at the Centro Cultural de Ciudad Universitaria (University Cultural Center). His work is, without a doubt, is worth a visit.
Another way to get to know the city is through mezcal. San Luis Potosí was one of the first states to receive Denominación de Origen (Origin Denomination) and there are established mezcal routes that take you to a number of haciendas that still use traditional manufacturing processes.
