California Vibes in Nicaragua: Discover San Juan del Sur's Surf Haven
After browsing the impressive selection of English bestsellers at El Gato Negro café and bookstore, my companion Dani and I settled at a vibrant window table. We ordered a creatively named bagel breakfast and treated ourselves to a premium blueberry spirulina smoothie—pricey but invigorating. In a restaurant buzzing with American visitors, we watched six athletic blond surfers load their boards onto a truck for a day on the waves.
With surfer slang like ‘gnarly’ and ‘dude’ echoing around us, the morning sun could have been shining over Santa Monica or Venice Beach, California. Yet we were actually in San Juan del Sur, a charming beach town on Nicaragua's Pacific coast, thousands of miles south. Having traveled from Estelí in the north through León, Managua, the Corn Islands, Granada, and Ometepe Island in Lake Nicaragua, it was astonishing that this surfer paradise shared the same country.

Just 45 minutes from the Costa Rica border, San Juan del Sur fuses Costa Rica's laid-back surfer vibe with North American infrastructure and conveniences—all at budget-friendly Nicaraguan prices. Expect colorful Central American homes alongside sleek modern apartments tailored for North American expats, who flock here in numbers.
The diverse accommodations—from hostels to beach resorts—cater to surfers and families on any budget. English speakers will find plenty of fellow ‘gringos’ to chat with, though many visitors love combining surf lessons and beach lounging with Spanish classes.
Far from a purely ‘authentic’ Nicaraguan experience, the town is a hit with international tourists, evident in restaurant and bar prices that rival California's.
That said, affordable dining awaits at local sodas—inexpensive eateries inspired by Costa Rican spots, popular thanks to cross-border visitors. Many budget hostels feature kitchens, letting you cook and feel at home during an extended stay in this ideal relaxation spot.
The town's long, sandy beach—rarely crowded—sits in a stunning bay with calm, wave-free waters. Prime surfing beaches lie 10-20 minutes away, accessible via daily 10am surfer shuttles from surf shops, a $10 taxi, or rented bicycles to explore deserted coastal stretches. Wide streets see minimal traffic, making it safe and easy for biking or walking.
Despite the California flair, San Juan del Sur retains authentic Nicaraguan charm: front porches with rocking chairs, street vendors hawking granizados and chicha, and warm, welcoming locals. Shelves stock Pop Tarts and Oreos, but Flor de Caña rum remains a steal—perfect for rum-fueled nights or 2-for-1 happy hour beers and cocktails.
Early starts are the norm, so grab a drink at a beach bar and witness breathtaking Pacific sunsets over the bay, a near-daily spectacle in this serene beach town.
