Where to Eat in San Juan, Puerto Rico

El Jibarito

For nearly 30 years, El Jibarito has delighted locals with authentic "Comida Criolla" (traditional Puerto Rican fare). This charming, tastefully decorated spot offers affordable prices and is a true neighborhood favorite—perfect for lunch and a few beers after wandering Old San Juan's colorful streets.

The mofongo (mashed plantains) is a standout, and the shrimp in garlic sauce is a must-try. Unsure what to order? Your server can guide you flawlessly.

Budatai

My first San Juan dining adventure at Budatai far surpassed expectations. Chef Roberto Treviño, an Iron Chef contestant, masterfully fuses Asian-inspired dishes with Puerto Rican flavors.

Highlights include pork dumplings with shaved truffles, the Geisha Roll (lobster, cream cheese, jicama with meringue kisses), Asian lobster mashed potatoes, spicy tuna pegao, and duck croquetas with Peking sauce.

A must-visit. Located at 1056 Ashford Avenue; open for lunch and dinner.

La Vista Latin Grill

Conveniently on the ground floor of the San Juan Marriott, La Vista Latin Grill serves Puerto Rican-inspired dishes and fresh seafood—ideal for us after indulging in great food and wine.

The grilled sea bass melts in your mouth. Don't skip the empanadas, pear and gorgonzola salad, or sea bass.

Located at 1309 Ashford Avenue in San Juan.

Bodegas Compostela

Bodegas Compostela surprised me with dishes I never expected to love, executed to perfection. It boasts an impressive array of wines, champagnes, tapas, and entrées.

Standouts from our tapas spread: octopus carpaccio, rabbit stew, duck confit, and the lobster soup of the day. Finish with every dessert on the menu—you won't regret it.

Located at 106 County Avenue in San Juan.
