San Fernando Cathedral: Texas's Oldest Church and Captivating Sound & Light Show

Established in 1731, San Fernando Cathedral is the oldest church in Texas. Situated on the edge of Main Plaza in San Antonio, it draws modern visitors as the stunning backdrop for San Antonio: The Saga, a mesmerizing sound and light show.
The sound and light show
This enchanting 24-minute after-dark spectacle brings San Antonio's history to life with vibrant, colorful projections on the cathedral's facade. Shows run four nights a week (Tuesday and Friday–Sunday at 9pm, 9:30pm, and 10pm; free admission).

History
San Fernando Cathedral played a key role in the 1836 Battle of the Alamo. James Bowie, who had wed here in happier times, defended the mission across the river. Mexican general Santa Anna seized the church as an observation post, raising a 'no quarter' flag—signaling no prisoners—which sparked the brutal siege.
In 1936, charred bones unearthed near the altar—identified on thin evidence of uniform fragments, though Alamo defenders wore none—were said to be those of Davy Crockett, William Travis, and James Bowie. They rest today in a marble casket just inside the left entrance.
