Altavista: Ancient Aztec Petroglyph Site Near Nuevo Ixtlán

Only 30 minutes from Rincón de Guayabitos is the Altavista Archaeological Site, known as “La Pila del Rey”. To get there you must go into the Sierra de Vallejo, a fascinating and completely green road.

 

In its 80 hectares ( 198 acres ) more than 2 thousand petroglyphs or stone engravings have been identified, which are believed to have been carved more than 1500 years ago by an Aztec group called Tecoxquines.

 

Surrounded by rocky formations and soaked in an almost otherworldly mysticism, La Pila del Rey shares its warm waters so you can immerse yourself while observing its Huichol art placed in the surrounding palms and trees.

 

After enjoying La Pila del Rey we recommend you go to Nuevo Ixtlan, there you will find a thermal water recreation center called “Las Cañadas” that you should definitely visit.

 

In Las Cañadas, in the shade, you will find 31 pools of thermal water, crystalline and comforting.

 

It has dressing rooms, toilets and some benches to sit down and enjoy nature, the environment is completely rustic and every space you see is built with ecological materials.
