Delve into Savannah's colorful past at the Savannah History Museum, located in the old passenger station of the Central of Georgia Railroad and home to more than 10,000 artifacts. The structure, a National Historic Landmark, features a variety of exhibits, including an 1890 steam locomotive, an antique cotton gin, and artifacts from the Civil War, Revolutionary War, and other eras. The museum is also home to Forrest Gump's bench, one of Johnny Mercer's Oscar Awards, and a carriage owned by the family of Girl Scouts founder Juliette Gordon Lowe. A small theater shows a film that provides an overview of the city's history from its founding in 1733. Grab breakfast or lunch on the patio or aboard a real dining rail car at the Whistle Stop Café located behind the museum, open daily.

The Savannah History Museum is operated by the Coastal Heritage Society, a non-profit organization that preserves two National Historic Landmarks and provides educational experiences for the public.
