Hacienda Cortina: A Restored 1920s Tropical Paradise Near San Diego de los Baños
A grand crenelated entry gate, located a few kilometers west of San Diego de los Baños, marks the entrance to Hacienda Cortina's surreal grounds. Conceived by wealthy lawyer José Manuel Cortina, this opulent private park was developed in the 1920s and 1930s, featuring a stately mansion at its heart. After nearly a century of neglect, restoration funding arrived in 2014, partially reviving this extraordinary estate.
This tropical haven offers plenty to explore, though it primarily attracts Cuban visitors rather than international tourists. A scenic driveway from the imposing entrance leads to a cluster of beautifully restored buildings, including a restaurant, swimming pool, and hotel (for Cubans only). A staircase descends through a French-style garden adorned with vibrant flowers and Carrera marble statues. Beyond lies the partially restored ruins of Cortina's original mansion, now home to an open-air bar-restaurant.
Flanking these areas, the lush, plant-filled grounds encompass an artificial boating lake, ornamental bridges, and Japanese and Chinese gardens with pagodas. This inspiring and picturesque domain shines despite occasional loud music from the dining spots.
The hacienda's grounds extend into the vast 25,000-hectare Parque La Güira.
