Rose Hall Great House: Jamaica's Legendary Haunted Plantation Mansion
This magnificent 1770s mansion stands as Jamaica's most renowned great house. Built by wealthy plantation owner John Palmer and his wife Rose—for whom it is named—it hosted the island's most lavish social events. The site's allure is amplified by the infamous legend of Annie Palmer, the 'White Witch,' said to have murdered three husbands, with her ghost still haunting the halls. Located 3km east of Ironshore, access is available only via guided tours.
Beyond its elegant Palladian portico lies a treasure of historical elegance, featuring a grand mahogany staircase and doors, plus silk wall coverings reproduced from originals designed for Marie Antoinette during Louis XVI's reign. Though looters stripped the house in the 19th century, its exquisite imported antique furnishings—crafted by master English carpenters—are authentic period pieces.
Destroyed by enslaved people during the 1831 Christmas Rebellion (Baptist War), the three-story structure lay in ruins for over a century until its meticulous restoration in 1966, reviving its stately grandeur.
Guided tours explore key rooms, including Annie Palmer's upstairs bedroom adorned in crimson silk brocades (evoking blood's hue), a secret passage to her slave lover's visits, her tomb, and the cellar housing period artifacts and an English-style pub.
Daytime tours highlight the opulent furnishings, while evening tours deliver theatrical thrills with staff emerging from shadows—perfect for the bold-hearted.
