Stunning #DestSalem Photos: Our Top Picks from May 2020 in Salem, MA

We love seeing everyone’s posts from around Salem, Massachusetts on social media and wanted to share a few of our favorites from last month. Check out our favorite images of Salem from May 2020 below, and use #DestSalem in your own posts to share your photos with us for our June roundup!

May brought the start of sailing season, and we’re excited to experience Salem on the water! Schooner Fame is currently sailing out of Pickering Wharf and Mahi Cruises is getting ready to reopen for their season later this summer. The Salem Ferry plans to reopen next month, allowing access to Salem from Boston by water (visit salemferry.com to confirm opening dates as you plan your visit).

We love this view of Salem Maritime National Historic Site! While the interior offerings have not yet reopened on Derby Wharf, we’ve been enjoying walking through the grounds of Salem Maritime National Historic Site and exploring the gardens behind the Derby House and the .5 mile walk out to the Derby Wharf Light Station.

Before Charter Street Cemetery‘s restoration project began, we shared some background on the styles of tombs you’ll find in historic cemeteries in Salem and around New England. (Hint: Nothing is held within a tabletop tomb like the one shown below, but remains are buried beneath these tombs. Read the full Instagram caption below to learn why.)

While May did come with the start of sailing season, we did get some unexpected weather. Here’s some photos of a May snowstorm captured by Salem Maritime National Historic Site. (Don’t worry, we got our spring weather back the next day!)

Salem State University celebrated the class of 2020 with a drive-by commencement celebration!

The House of the Seven Gables just opened their gardens at the beginning of this month, but in May staff were hard at work preparing the historic site for reopening. Stop by their historic gardens next time you wander down Derby Street and learn about the site’s history with their outdoor audio tour.

May 28 was National Cheeseburger Day and Ledger went all out! They also have been running “Ledger Basket” this spring while restaurants were limited to offering takeout and curbside pickup only. Ledger Basket featured some of their fan-favorite menu items along with groceries and prepared meals to go.

Did you know there is a concrete slide at Forest River Park? Brave souls can grab a piece of cardboard and slide down like many did in the early 20th century.
