South Africa Bucket List: A Travel Expert's 4 Unforgettable Moments
1. Discovering Cape Town's Magic
Cape Town ranked top on The New York Times' list of the world's best cities this year—and it's easy to see why. Nelson Mandela's spirit infuses the city, especially its warm, proud locals whose hospitality matches the stunning landscapes. I felt pure euphoria gazing at Table Mountain's silhouette at sunset and cruising past surfer-packed beaches. Staying near the waterfront marina, I savored top restaurants serving Dutch classics and fresh seafood. Highlights included kingklip fish and garlic-chili prawns at Den Anker. Afternoons meant market strolls, sea lion photos, and Indian tea while watching sailboats glide by.2. Breathtaking Aerial Views of Cape of Good Hope
Our Cape of Good Hope day was unforgettable from start to finish. We began with a stormy boat to Seal Island—familiar from Shark Week—braving massive waves in great white territory. We survived to see thousands of seals, erasing any fears.
The national park drive felt like a mini-safari: ostriches, baboons, and gazelles everywhere. At the landmark's base, dramatic rock formations met crashing waves. The highlight? A gondola ride to the lighthouse for panoramic views of the concave beaches marking South Africa's southern tip. That's when it hit me: I'm really here.
3. Cage Diving with Great White Sharks
No South Africa trip for this shark enthusiast would skip facing great whites. Trips often cancel in bad weather, so I booked three backups. The first two were scrapped, but the third went ahead to Gansbaai, a hotspot for these predators.
After warnings of possible no-shows, a grey silhouette appeared right away. As the last group in the cage, amid crew excitement, I dove in—thrill overriding fear. Their black eyes were calm and aloof as they glided by, until bait triggered frenzied attacks. Mesmerizing—and now ocean swims feel less daunting.
4. Encountering Lions on Safari
Two days at Entabeni Game Reserve targeted the Big Five, but lions were the prize. On the final drive, tracking radio reports of a fresh kill and drag marks, we played detectives in the grasslands.
Three vehicles circled; ours spotted a fox trailing their scent to seven massive lions devouring an antelope. Majestic and unbothered, they created another lifetime highlight.
