How long did you spend traveling in South Africa?
We spent nearly 60 days in South Africa during our round-the-world trip, including a few days in Swaziland and Lesotho.
Budget tips for South Africa?
South Africa can be less budget-friendly than expected, especially with a strong rand influenced by events like the World Cup. We rented a car for a month from Tempest Car Rental and extended it, which allowed us to save by camping and self-driving through national parks.
We camped 99% of the time—facilities are abundant, well-maintained, and affordable. Renting a car was cheaper and more flexible than the Baz Bus (backpacker transport), which limits routes. Public intercity transport can be challenging. Our economy car handled national parks effortlessly.
Favorite places or experiences in South Africa?
We visited nearly every national park—they're incredibly diverse and spectacular. Our top pick: Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, remote and immersive in the bush. One night, lions roared outside our camp's electric fence—terrifying yet exhilarating!
What is the food like in South Africa?
South African cuisine is diverse and delicious. In Cape Town, try Cape Malay dishes. Enjoy potjies, braai (barbecue), bunny chow (curry) in Durban, and peri-peri chicken. Food was a highlight everywhere!

Dos and don’ts regarding customs in South Africa?
With its diverse population, customs vary. Always be polite and represent your country positively. South Africans are exceptionally friendly and hospitable.
The best places to stay in South Africa?
National park campgrounds are outstanding—equipped with stoves, fridges, and excellent bathhouses. We tried backpacker hostels for camping, but many aren't optimized for it; we often ended up on lawns using dorm facilities. Use the free Coast to Coast guide from hostels for reliable options.
Must-do activities or must-see sites in South Africa?
A safari is essential—each park offers unique wildlife. Hike Table Mountain in Cape Town, and visit Tsitsikamma and Storms River for stunning natural beauty. We skipped cage diving with great whites due to concerns over chumming practices.

Safety tips, warnings, or things to be aware of in South Africa?
We encountered no major issues, but stay vigilant. Tip car guards at shopping centers for vehicle security. Avoid late-night travel; rural roads are rough with animals and pedestrians. In cities, watch for pickpockets—don't flash valuables or leave them visible in cars. Consult campground or hostel staff for local advice. Common sense avoids scams.
