Welcome to the Around the World Interview series on Ordinary Traveler! We feature guests who have lived in or spent extended time in destinations worldwide, offering expert insights and practical tips.
This week, Michael from Go, See, Write shares his comprehensive Jordan travel tips based on three visits.
How long have you traveled in Jordan?
I've visited Jordan three times: in 2009 during my round-the-world trip, in April 2011 as a guest of the Jordan Tourism Board, and in January for work in Amman.
Budget travel tips for Jordan?
Jordan lacks traditional hostels, but affordable rooms are available on sites like Hostelworld. Many budget hotels offer day tours to sites like the desert castles, Dead Sea, and Jerash. Petra is pricier due to higher hotel rates and the entrance fee—budget two days for it.
Favorite places or experiences in Jordan?
Petra is a world-class must-see, ranking in the global top 10. I also loved Jerash's Roman ruins and Madaba's ancient mosaic map of the Holy Land.

What is the food like in Jordan?
Jordanian cuisine excels in Middle Eastern flavors. Try the massive, meaty olives, the national dish mansaf (tender goat with rice), and generous mezze platters. Don't miss Zumot Winery's excellent wines in Amman—owner Omar Zumot is incredibly hospitable and shares captivating stories.
Dos and don’ts regarding customs in Jordan?
Dress modestly. Jordanians are exceptionally hospitable—accept invitations to homes for meals or overnight stays.
Favorite place to stay in Jordan?
As a Jordan Tourism Board guest, I stayed at luxurious spots like the world-class Evason Ma’in Hot Springs near the Dead Sea. I'd return in a heartbeat.

Must-do activities or must-see sites in Jordan?
Petra is essential. Wadi Rum is breathtaking—perfect for reflection amid its serene beauty, especially for Lawrence of Arabia fans.
Safety tips, warnings, or things to be aware of in Jordan?
Jordan is very safe. Regional issues in Syria or Egypt haven't affected it. Vendors don't hassle, and cab drivers are among the most honest I've encountered. Jordanian hospitality sets a high standard.
Best and cheapest times to visit Jordan?
Winter can be surprisingly cold (even snowy), and summer at Petra is intensely hot. Optimal times balance weather extremes.
Packing tips for Jordan?
Pack comfortable walking shoes, breathable clothing, a hat, and for women, a pashmina for mosques. Bring a camera, a hearty appetite, and openness to new friends.
