Reflecting on 2014: Our Top Travel Adventures and Unforgettable Moments
Reflecting on 2014, I'm grateful for the incredible destinations we explored. We intentionally slowed our travel pace from 2013, becoming more selective to focus on truly exceptional spots. This shift allowed more time for reflection, enjoying our San Diego home—cozying up with a new electric fireplace, surfing, hosting dinner parties, and celebrating with close friends.
2014 marked my first full year thriving as a self-employed travel writer, earning more than ever before. We dedicated time to ambitious goals, including a complete website redesign and migration to WordPress. The effort paid off with over 100% traffic growth and a more user-friendly experience. I'm excited for 2015 with this refreshed platform.
Whether due to age or suitcase fatigue, I've embraced more home time. We'll maintain this balanced pace in 2015, with exciting trips already booked—stay tuned for details!
Here are our standout travel experiences from 2014, drawn from hands-on adventures across the globe.
Thrilling Adventures in the Florida Keys
My year kicked off with a dynamic itinerary in Florida's southern gems. This U.S. exploration reminded me to venture more domestically. Highlights: soaring over the ocean on a jetpack and wakeboarding on a cable course. The soreness was worth every exhilarating moment.

Karneval Festivities in Düsseldorf
In late February, I immersed myself in Düsseldorf's Karneval, Europe's answer to Mardi Gras. Unfamiliar with these vibrant German traditions, I joined the multi-day street party and even tossed candy from a parade float—an unforgettable introduction to the city.
Belgian Beer Delights in Antwerp
A beer enthusiast, I extended my European trip to Belgium's Brussels, Antwerp, and Bruges. Antwerp captivated me most, with cozy cellar restaurants and candlelit tastings of world-class brews. I dream of a future Trappist brewery tour.

Aerial Wonders Over Panama City Beach
Returning to Florida, Panama City Beach delivered despite post-rain murkiness. A helicopter tour revealed crystal-clear views of dolphins, turtles, stingrays, and sharks gliding below—a testament to the area's natural beauty.

Gourmet Indulgence in Bologna
Next, a solo Italian escape to Bologna. Staying in a central apartment, I shopped local markets, wandered porticoed streets, and savored endless pasta and cheese—a food lover's paradise.

Scuba Certification in Bonaire
In June, Bonaire became my underwater haven. Earning PADI certification, I fell deeply in love with this Caribbean gem. Though family plans shifted elsewhere, Bonaire's magic lingers—I'll return.

Relaxation Retreat in Mauritius
Our first major couple's trip: a 30+ hour journey to Mauritius. Beach-focused bliss on Le Morne peninsula included celebrating my partner's birthday amid pure downtime.

Puffin Quest in Newfoundland
Late August brought me to Newfoundland's Irish Loop for puffins and whales. Magical puffin encounters in Elliston shone, despite elusive whales on foggy Ocean Quest snorkel tours—hilarious tales ensued.

Cultural Immersion on Moloka'i
Third Hawaii visit: four days on Moloka'i connecting with locals who cherish their land. Regret: too little ocean time. We plan a return for more.
Turtle Snorkeling in St. Maarten
October at Maho Beach Resort dodged Hurricane Gonzalo. Post-storm, we relaxed poolside, plane-watched, and snorkeled murky waters with adorable sea turtles.

Central California Coast Road Trip
Year-end: San Luis Obispo to Carmel, uncovering hidden central coast gems like Big Sur. Detailed posts coming soon.
Reviewing 2014 reveals a packed, enriching year of destinations and connections. Grateful for it all—what adventures await in 2015!
