Zagat Simplifies Its Iconic Restaurant Rating System to a 5-Point Scale
Founded in 1979 by Tim and Nina Zagat, Zagat pioneered user-generated content in dining. Its rigorous 30-point survey system for top restaurants built its authority in ratings and reviews for over three decades. This summer, under Google ownership, Zagat modernized with a universal 5-point scale.
Unlike competitors like Yelp and TripAdvisor, Zagat maintains ratings across food, decor, and service, now with decimals for precision. The updated scale is:
4.6 - 5.0: Extraordinary to perfection
4.1 - 4.5: Very good to excellent
3.1 - 4.0: Good to very good
2.1 - 3.0: Fair to good
1.0 - 2.0: Poor to fair
