Ultimate Guide: Road Trip Through Utah's Mighty 5 National Parks
Embark on an unforgettable road trip through Utah's Mighty 5 National Parks—Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Arches, and Canyonlands. These parks showcase some of the world's most breathtaking and otherworldly landscapes, earning a spot on every adventurer's bucket list.
Invited by Visit Utah, I recently followed their "Roughing It" itinerary, exploring Capitol Reef, Arches, Canyonlands, and highlights in between. Easily extend it to include all five parks. Drawing from my firsthand experience, here's your complete guide to planning the ultimate Mighty 5 road trip.

Salt Lake City to Fishlake & Zion
From Salt Lake City Airport heading to Zion, detour along the scenic 40-mile Fishlake Loop. Towering aspen groves offer a refreshing contrast to Utah's red rock parks. Overnight options include lakeside camping, cabins, or the comfortable Holiday Inn Express in nearby Richfield.

Zion National Park, the most visited of the five, is just three hours from Fishlake. Arrive early to beat crowds. See our Zion travel and hiking guide for top hikes and lodging recommendations.

Zion to Bryce Canyon
Bryce Canyon is a quick 1.5-hour drive from Zion. Dedicate a full day to its world's largest concentration of hoodoos—stunning in person beyond any photo. Nearby stays include Bryce Valley Lodging, Best Western Bryce Canyon Grand Hotel, Bryce Canyon Log Cabins, and campgrounds.
Bryce Canyon to Boulder Mountain, Burr Trail, & Capitol Reef
From Bryce, drive through Boulder Mountain to Capitol Reef National Park, or detour via the Burr Trail scenic backway with stops at Singing Canyon and Lower Muley Twist Canyon.

Base near Capitol Reef at Capitol Reef Resort (luxury teepees with king beds and TVs, cabins, or rooms), Torrey hotels, or park campgrounds (book ahead). Must-do easy hikes: Grand Wash, Cassidy Arch Trail, Hickman Bridge.

Capitol Reef to San Rafael Swell
This stretch highlights Utah's rugged beauty. From Hanksville, take UT-24 E 20 miles, turn left on Temple Mt Road toward Goblin Valley State Park (worth a stop). Before the visitor center, right on Wild Horse Road to Little Wild Horse Canyon—a beginner-friendly slot canyon hike.
Well-marked and popular, hike 2 miles in or complete the 8-mile loop with ample water. Nearby, Ding & Dang Canyon suits experienced hikers only. Continue to Wedge Overlook and Little Grand Canyon trails.

San Rafael Swell to Arches & Canyonlands
Arches and Canyonlands are 30 minutes apart; use Moab as your hub. Stay at the new Aarchway Inn, 2 miles from Arches entrance—ideal for sunrise/sunset visits (drive to town for meals). In Moab, try Comfort Suites Moab. Dining: Village Market sandwiches, Bangkok House Thai (delivery), MOYO frozen yogurt.

Arches highlights: Windows, Double Arch, Delicate Arch, Landscape Arch, Balanced Rock. In Canyonlands, drive scenic routes; hike Mesa Arch, White Rim Overlook, Grand View Point. Pro tip: 25 minutes from Moab, Fisher Towers offers crowd-free vistas.

How Many Days?
All five parks? Allow 7-10 days to avoid rushing. The "Roughing It" route fits 6 days.
Flying Into Las Vegas?
Vegas works, but Salt Lake City Airport is smoother amid Vegas construction. Moab to Vegas: 7 hours; to Salt Lake City: 3.5 hours.
