Ultimate Winter Road Trip Guide: Discover South Dakota's Scenic Wonders
South Dakota is an undiscovered gem, especially in winter when its wooded valleys and majestic waterfalls become a breathtaking winter wonderland. Drawing from my personal road trip through the state's most scenic routes, this guide highlights top attractions and practical tips for an unforgettable adventure.
Start in Rapid City by strolling the charming Main Street, then check into the Rushmore Hotel & Suites for a restful night before embarking on your journey. Our itinerary runs east to west, but feel free to customize it to suit your schedule.

Badlands National Park
One of South Dakota's premier attractions, the Badlands feature dramatic canyons and layered rock formations. Drive the scenic loop for stunning vistas. Note the $30 vehicle entrance fee (cash handy recommended)—the iconic views are absolutely worth it.
En route, stop at Wall Drug for legendary maple donuts and 5-cent coffee. This massive roadside attraction rivals an indoor mall, offering historic paintings, artifacts, souvenir shops, and authentic Native American jewelry.

Deadwood
Steeped in Wild West history—famously depicted in HBO's series—Deadwood's downtown buzzes with legend. Visit Saloon #10, site of Wild Bill Hickok's fateful poker game in the 19th century, and grab a drink.
Explore the Black Hills National Forest via snowshoe, snowmobile, or challenging backcountry hikes on extensive trails. Terry Peak Ski Area offers excellent slopes. Base yourself at Deadwood Lodge for the perfect stay.

Spearfish Canyon
Spearfish Canyon is South Dakota's crown jewel: towering forested mountains, hidden waterfalls, streams, and caves await along the drive.
Stay at Spearfish Canyon Lodge and hike nearby to Latchstring restaurant, then to enchanting Spearfish Falls—a semi-frozen spectacle. Spot the fully frozen waterfall at 11th Hour Gulch near mile marker 20 (traction boots essential).

Adventure seekers can explore Community Caves, the area's premier cave spot (challenging to find in snow—check access info here). Rent snowshoes or snowmobiles (“sleds” locally) at the lodge.

Mount Rushmore
From Spearfish, visit Mount Rushmore, South Dakota's iconic monument. If weather allows, hike the Presidential Trail and refuel at Carver's Cafe with panoramic views.
Before returning to Rapid City, charge your camera for Custer State Park—home to massive bison herds and abundant wildlife.
