Isle Of Skye Travel Guide
If you love photography and rugged mountain scenery, a road trip on the Isle of Skye is unbeatable. Steeped in myths of giants and fairies, with ancient castles and clan battle sites, it feels like stepping into a fantasy epic.
The island unfolds across peninsulas rich in legend and beauty.
This guide focuses on the Trotternish Peninsula (east), Waternish Peninsula (west), and Black Cuillin Hills (south)—Skye's premier highlights from my travels.
When To Visit Skye
Rain is common year-round, but summer offers the best weather. April to mid-June balances milder conditions with fewer crowds than peak July-August, when roads and lodging fill up fast.
How Long Should You Stay?
Circumnavigating Skye takes half a day non-stop, but with attractions, plan 2+ full days. Add half-days for travel from/to Fort William. Pair with Highlands stays near Fort William and a day in Edinburgh or Glasgow for a perfect week-long Scotland itinerary.
Weather On The Isle Of Skye
Expect frequent rain, peaking September-January (October wettest). March-June is drier. Warmest in May-September, with highs of 13-18°C (55-64°F).
Best Things To Do On The Isle Of Skye
1. Explore The Village Of Portree
Portree, Skye's vibrant capital, charms with its colorful harbor, cafes, pubs, shops, and essentials. This 200-year-old fishing village is your ideal base for supplies, meals, and scenic strolls amid pastel homes.
2. Walk Across Sligachan Bridge
At the Black Cuillins' base since 1830, Sligachan is a climber's crossroads. Its iconic stone bridge, Skye's most photographed, spans legendary waters promising eternal beauty to those who dip their face for seven seconds.
3. Visit The Fairy Pools
Cascading from the Black Cuillins, these crystal-clear pools and waterfalls are magical. A 30-40 minute hike from the car park rewards with swims in icy, breathtaking waters.

These 36 jagged peaks have drawn climbers for 150 years. Tackle the 12km Black Cuillin Traverse (2 days with gear) or hike to Loch Coruisk via Elgol ferry, as I did. Clear days reveal UK-best views from Sgurr na Stri summit. The 7-day Skye Trail offers epic coastal-mountain traverses.
5. The Old Man Of Storr
A Skye essential: 45-minute hike to towering rock pinnacles, a film backdrop (e.g., Prometheus) and giant's-finger legend. Often misty, but near Portree for return visits.
6. Experience The Quiraing
My top Skye spot: Landslide-sculpted cliffs, pinnacles, and plateaus. Hike trails, drive the winding road for coastal vistas (Raasay, Rona on clear days). Stay cautious on edges.

A855 viewpoint: Kilt-like cliffs and Mealt Falls plunging to the sea. Prime for photos (drone ideal).
8. Explore The Fairy Glen
Near Uig, this whimsical valley features conical hills, twisted trees, sheep, stone circles, and a tower overlook—fairies' realm incarnate.
9. The Neist Point Lighthouse
Skye's westernmost tip: 480,000-candlepower lighthouse amid sheer cliffs. Walk to it (windy; edges dangerous), sunset perfection.

Clan MacLeod seat for 800+ years: Tour heirlooms, paintings, and the Fairy Flag—a battle-winning fairy gift.

Since 1831, savor peaty island whisky. Robert Louis Stevenson praised Talisker as "king o' drinks."
12. Rubha Hunish Viewpoint
Northern tip: 8.5km coastal hike for whales (Minke, Orca), dolphins, seals; Orkney views; bothy camping.
13. Road Cycling Around Skye
Guided cycles with support vans showcase winding roads and vistas.

Secluded gem: Ferry to Black Cuillins or Loch Coruisk hikes.

Iconic, shaggy "coos" thrive in harsh climes; spot (but respect distance) in fields.
