Ultimate 6-Day Iceland Road Trip Itinerary: Expert Guide to Must-See Sights
Short on time but dreaming of Iceland's wonders? Our expert-curated 6-day road trip itinerary covers the must-see attractions in an efficient, enjoyable loop. Based on our firsthand experience, it's ideal for 5-6 days, with extra buffer recommended for winter due to shorter days and variable road conditions.
While the full Ring Road is tempting, completing it in 6 days means minimal exploration time. We prioritized hiking, photography, and immersive experiences across six full days.
Always Check the Weather First!
Upon arrival, consult Iceland's weather forecast (vedur.is) to plan your route. Prioritize must-see spots based on clear conditions. During our trip, southern roads from Selfoss to Jökulsárlón closed due to high winds, forcing adjustments. Exposed southern routes close for safety in storms—wait it out or detour fully around the island.

Arrival Day: Settle In Reykjavík
Pick up your rental (like our Happy Campers campervan) and unwind. We opted for an Airbnb in Reykjavík for showers and rest—essential after travel. Campgrounds with facilities are a budget alternative (~$100 USD saved us comfort).
Stock up on groceries here for the best selection and prices. Happy Campers' "Free Zone" offers leftover traveler supplies—grab extras before shopping.
