Reflections from an Epic RV Road Trip: Pro Photographer's National Parks Insights
To the envy of everyone at Travelzoo, our friend Brandon Sharpe—an accomplished photographer and avid road tripper—rented a 22-foot Apollo RV through one of our Top 20 deals and embarked on an unforgettable journey through America's most iconic national parks.
Along the way, he captured stunning photos (check his Instagram updates from parts one, two, and three) at Badlands National Park, Grand Teton, Yellowstone National Park, Glacier National Park, the Washington Cascades, Olympic National Park, and beyond.
Now back home in Chicago, Brandon shares his expert advice from the road.

What advice would you give a family member or friend planning an RV trip?
Expect unpredictable weather. One major challenge was inclement conditions, starting with a blizzard-like snowstorm in Badlands National Park. A ranger assured me it was highly unusual, but it set the tone. Rain persisted in Washington state, though we enjoyed plenty of sun between storms. Driving cross-country means chasing weather fronts, but it didn't dampen our spirits.
Plan extra time at each destination. We loved every stop but wished we'd allocated more days upfront. We adapted on the fly, extending our stay at Yosemite National Park—a decision that became a trip highlight.

Would you do it again? What would you change?
Absolutely—the hardest part was ending it! I'd happily RV across the U.S. for a year (or the world, if possible). Our diverse landscapes are a treasure.
On a return, I'd revisit Glacier National Park. Its remote beauty, dreamlike mountains, and surreal wildlife encounters—like waking to elk beside the RV—made it unforgettable. I'm already planning a solo trip back.

Must-visit spots for everyone? Why? Any to skip?
Don't miss Olympic National Forest northwest of Seattle. This pristine paradise boasts lush greenery, abundant wildlife, and the enchanting Hoh Rainforest. Hike toward the central glacier for a good chance of wildlife sightings in early summer.
Skip northeastern California en route to San Francisco. Lacking dramatic landscapes, it led to heavy traffic that was tough in a 22-foot RV. Next time, I'd bypass the city entirely—it's not RV-friendly.

What do you wish you'd known before leaving?
I underestimated the RV's amenities, like the full bathroom and shower—I overpacked toiletries unnecessarily. Next time, I'd plan longer stops to use the stove and fridge for home-cooked meals and a relaxed pace.
