Ultimate Guide to Camping in California's Channel Islands National Park: Expert Tips from Real Adventurers
Planning a trip to California's Channel Islands National Park? This comprehensive guide covers everything you need to know about visiting the five protected islands: Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel, and Santa Barbara Island.
While eight islands lie off Southern California's coast—including popular Catalina—only these five form the national park and marine sanctuary. Each offers designated campgrounds, making them ideal for overnight adventures. Our first visit was a day trip to Anacapa from Oxnard, featuring hikes and a thrilling orca and gray whale sighting on the return ferry. A later Santa Cruz day trip from Santa Barbara inspired our July camping booking.
Booking is straightforward, but preparation demands planning, especially for gear. Drawing from our experiences, this guide focuses on Scorpion Ranch on Santa Cruz Island but applies park-wide.

Booking Your Ferry to Channel Islands National Park
The National Park Service advises securing ferry tickets via Island Packers before reserving campsites, as ferries book up faster due to day trippers. From Ventura Harbor, the ~1-hour ride to Scorpion Anchorage often reveals wildlife.
For early ferries, stay nearby like the Country Inn & Suites By Carlson in Ventura (5 minutes away), with breakfast and ice machines for coolers. Arrive 1 hour early for gear loading.

Reserving a Campsite
Sites at Scorpion Ranch fill steadily but were available 3 months ahead—even in summer. Book early via Recreation.gov for weekends or holidays. The lower loop is a 0.5-mile hike; upper loop ~1 mile. Amenities include potable water, pit toilets, picnic tables, and food storage.
For backpackers, Del Norte Campground (3.5 miles from Prisoners Harbor) offers ocean views but no water—pack 1 gallon per person per day.

Pack In, Pack Out Policy
No trash service means carrying out all waste. Minimize packaging, plan meals ahead, and store everything properly to protect pristine ecosystems and wildlife like island foxes. These curious foxes are adorable but must not be fed—secure food, socks, and gear in bins.

Kayaking Adventures on Santa Cruz Island
Kayak the crystal-clear marine sanctuary waters—perfect for summer heat relief. We joined Santa Barbara Adventure Company's tour (wetsuits, shoes, snorkel gear included). Sea caves, wildlife, and tips like kelp whistles made it unforgettable. Each trip varies by conditions and guides.
