Long on our tropical bucket list, we were stunned that so few travelers know their location. Just a direct flight from Los Angeles, they've become our top destination. Leverage our proven Cook Islands tips for your perfect trip.

Top Islands to Visit in the Cook Islands
The Southern Group—Aitutaki, Palmerston, Manuae (uninhabited), Takutea, Mitiaro, Atiu, Mauke, Rarotonga, and Mangaia—boasts the best infrastructure on Rarotonga and Aitutaki. Regular flights serve all except Palmerston and Manuae via Air Rarotonga.
Mangaia, the second-largest isle with just 500 residents, remains untouched. Atiu shines with limestone caves and world-class diving—both largely undiscovered.

The remote Northern Group (Pukapuka, Penrhyn, Rakahanga, Manihiki, Nassau, Suwarrow) demands higher costs and effort. Focus on accessible Rarotonga and Aitutaki for authentic, off-the-beaten-path bliss.

Sample Cook Islands Itinerary
- Overnight Flight to Rarotonga via Air New Zealand: Arrive with a full day ahead. Confirm hotel check-in; Muri Beachcomber provides lounge access, showers, and facilities until noon. We kayaked the lagoon—room ready by 11am.
- 3-4 Nights in Rarotonga: Don't skip it—we loved it as much as (or more than) Aitutaki.
- Air Rarotonga Flight to Aitutaki: Secure a window seat for the scenic 30-minute hop.
- 3-6 Nights on Aitutaki: Switch resorts for varied experiences; see recommendations below.
- Aitutaki Lagoon Tour: Essential—book Aitutaki Adventures (west-side cruise, One Foot Island stop) or Bishop's Cruises (~$99 NZD/person). Avoid windier options.

How to Reach the Cook Islands
From the US, Air New Zealand flies direct LAX-Rarotonga (RAR): 10 hours outbound, 8.5 return. Kiwis fly from Auckland; Aussies from Sydney. Intra-island hops via Air Rarotonga.
A West Coast favorite, this direct service outshines Caribbean connections. Air New Zealand impressed with top-tier service—now our go-to airline.
Shoulder-season deals abound; subscribe to newsletters for alerts.

Best Time to Visit the Cook Islands
Tropical climate suits year-round visits. Rainy summer (Nov-mid Apr) warms waters but spikes humidity. We chose shoulder-season October (spring): milder winds, prime deals. Note cyclone risk Dec-Apr.

Packing Essentials for the Cook Islands
Photography Gear: GoPro (with selfie stick) for underwater shots; DSLR for land (see our travel camera guide).
Clothing: Sandals (Rainbow recommended), swimsuits, sun hat, water shoes—year-round musts.
Tunic Cover-Ups: Essential for women; pack 1-2 stylish ones.

Bug Spray: Pack plenty—this travel pump suits day trips; larger for rooms.
Sunscreen: Expensive locally—bring ample.
Rash Guard: Long-sleeve for snorkeling sun/UV protection and slight warmth.

Snorkel Gear: Own mask/fins save money and ensure quality.
Carry-On Tips: Follow our carry-on packing guide.
WiFi & Cell Service in the Cook Islands
Remote location means no cheap roaming—disable data/airplane mode essential. US carriers charge ~$15/MB; 100MB vanishes in minutes.
Hotels offer 100MB/$10 packages—disable auto-updates to preserve data.

Best Places to Stay in the Cook Islands
Rarotonga Stays
Muri Beach is prime: protected lagoon for kayaking, swimming, SUP to islets. After thorough research, Muri Beachcomber delivered—ocean-view villa, kitchen, amenities (free bikes/PADDL/boards/snorkel, shuttle, breakfast).

Underrated vs. Aitutaki—we hated leaving.

Aitutaki Stays
Aitutaki's serenity stuns post-Rarotonga.
Casual Luxury: Tamanu Beach—top snorkel spot, sheltered, ~$250USD/night with breakfast. Excellent restaurant (scarce fresh produce elsewhere); free kayaks/shuttle.

Luxury: Pacific Resort Aitutaki, Etu Moana Beach Villas (west side), Aitutaki Lagoon Resort & Spa (overwater bungalows).
Top Dining in the Cook Islands
Vili’s Takeaway (Rarotonga):
Discovered last night—world's best burgers, affordable, Muri Beach location near Muri Beachcomber.

The Mooring (Rarotonga):
Local fave for fresh fish sandwiches/salads—Cajun tuna standout.

Tauono’s (Aitutaki):
Lunch (Mon/Wed/Fri 12-2): fresh fish/veggie options; market (10-5) for organic produce.
