From Sun to Snow: Why Happy Valley is the Ultimate Year-Round Destination
Happy Valley lives up to its name as a vibrant, family-friendly destination. With seasonal activities ranging from fruit picking and skiing to hiking, dining, and thrilling sports events, there's always something exciting to do. Home to Penn State University, it boasts one of the nation's most dynamic college sports scenes, featuring 31 men's and women's teams and the iconic "We Are" chants echoing across campus year-round.
Winter
As leaves give way to snow—lasting from late fall into February—Tussey Mountain transforms into a haven for skiers and snowboarders. Choose from various trails, including a dedicated snow tubing run for those less agile on skis.
Winter sports heat up too. From October through February, the men's ice hockey team fills Pegula Ice Arena, powered by the passionate Roar Zone student section on one endboard, taunting opponents with signs and cheers. Meanwhile, basketball teams draw the Legion of Blue and devoted fans to the Bryce Jordan Center for intense Big Ten matchups.
Spring
Snow melts reveal outdoor gems like the blooming Penn State Arboretum, ideal for an afternoon stroll. Nearby, Bald Eagle State Park and Raystown Lake offer family lodging, fishing, hiking, and boating. Penn's Cave provides unique boat tours through a 1,300-foot all-water cavern, showcasing central Pennsylvania's geology.
Spring sports kick off in mid-March at dedicated venues: softball behind East Halls, baseball at Medlar Field near Beaver Stadium, and lacrosse at the newly renovated Panzer Stadium by the Bryce Jordan Center. Bundle up—the early games can be chilly.
Summer
With Penn State on summer break, Happy Valley slows its pace but amps up the fun. Savor creamy treats at the Berkey Creamery. Mid-July's Arts Fest, Pennsylvania's largest family-friendly arts and crafts festival (now in its 27th year), packs downtown. Tussey Mountain's Wing Fest (Thursdays, July to mid-August) offers $5 entry for live music, drinks, and a local restaurant wing competition atop the slopes.
No college games, but the State College Spikes, the Single-A Short-Season affiliate of the Cardinals, play at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park from mid-June to early September, complete with lively mid-inning entertainment.
Fall
Fall blankets Happy Valley in stunning red, orange, and yellow foliage. Hike Mount Nittany—four miles from downtown—for seven overlooks of the valley. Early fall must-visits include Way Fruit Farm, Wasson Farm Market, and Good Intent Cider.
Penn State football electrifies Saturdays at Beaver Stadium amid a sea of blue and white—avoid driving in; book lodging nearby. Beyond football, catch women's volleyball (seven-time national champs) at Rec Hall with the RECking Crew, or men's and women's soccer at Jeffrey Field (capacity 4,000), home to the Sons of Jeffrey student section.
Cap your day at local favorites: The Field Burger and Tap, American Ale House, Champs Sports Bar, Faccia Luna, or The Corner Room. From Nittany Lions action and top eateries to mountain hikes, lakes, and festivals, Happy Valley delivers endless entertainment. Pick a season and dive in!
