Good Intent Cider: Handcrafted Pennsylvania Apple Ciders Near Bellefonte

Good Intent Cider, just a short walk from downtown Bellefonte, offers a welcoming space to sample an array of ciders crafted from Pennsylvania apples. Highlights include Happy Valley Gold, a rich, complex blend of over 30 Happy Valley-grown apple varieties, and the award-winning Wickson, known for its delightful candy-like tartness.

When COVID-19 cases surged in early 2020, the team at Good Intent Cider recognized their intimate tasting room needed adaptation for safety. They pivoted swiftly, introducing innovative to-go options and enhanced customer experiences.

Initially limited in takeout offerings, they expanded with a crowler machine that seals fresh 500mL cans on demand and renovated their tap system to feature 12 rotating ciders. "We purchased a can-sealing machine to fill custom orders for patrons," explains cidermaker Simon. "During the shutdown, we upgraded our taps and boosted bottle production to meet demand for to-go sales and the North Atherton Farmers Market."

Crowlers are priced at $9 to $10 each. Current to-go selections are listed on the Good Intent Cider website and Instagram. For those unable to visit, delivery is available directly from the site, covering State College, Bellefonte, Pleasant Gap, Milesburg, Julian, Boalsburg, and Lemont (with restrictions noted).

Simon recommends purchasing crowlers, bottles, growlers, merchandise like shirts, hoodies, and baseball tees, or gift cards via pickup or delivery to support the cidery. Watch for upcoming winter and spring promotions. While a socially distanced patio operated under a tent last summer, service shifted to takeout-only in December, resuming outdoor seating in spring 2021.

No matter when you visit Happy Valley or Bellefonte, Simon asserts, "It's some of the best cider in Pennsylvania, if not the entire East Coast. Everything is handmade in small batches by our sole cidermaker—me. With 12 ciders always on tap, you'll find traditional styles, single-varietal, hopped, and spiced options unique to the region."
