Savannah’s Playground: Myrtle Beach's Premier Inclusive Park for Children of All Abilities
Recently, we attended the grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony for Savannah’s Playground at Market Common in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The event was truly heartwarming, featuring perfect weather, inspiring community members, and a collective celebration of a long-held dream coming to life.
Savannah’s Playground—a collaborative effort led by Myrtle Beach Mayor John Rhodes, local legislators, business leaders, and community advocates—is a groundbreaking enabling playground. All equipment meets ADA standards, ensuring children of all abilities can play outdoors together. It's the first of its kind in the Southeast United States.
Named after Savannah Thompson, a vibrant 20-year-old Myrtle Beach native with Williams Syndrome, the playground reflects her unstoppable energy and optimism. Despite her disabilities, Savannah has lived a full, inspiring life, playing a pivotal role in the project's fundraising, planning, and construction.
This $3 million multi-acre destination includes an early childhood playground, school-age playground, interactive zones, a harmony music park, challenge ropes, ziplining, and much more. Open to residents and the millions of annual visitors, Myrtle Beach officials envision it as a must-visit gem for families.
Fully wheelchair- and sensory-friendly, Savannah’s Playground champions a barrier-free world for children with special needs. From adaptive swings to the engaging music park, it invites everyone to play, connect, and rediscover joy—making it an ideal addition to any Myrtle Beach vacation itinerary.
Update: With major sections now complete, future phases will add a recycled-water splash pad, a fishing pier, and wheelchair-accessible paddleboats. More excitement on the horizon!
