Vereen Historical Memorial Gardens: A Premier Free Destination for Nature and History Lovers in Little River, SC
As a longtime resident of the Grand Strand, I maintain a curated list of free, family-friendly activities to enjoy year-round, especially during the bustling summer season. While the Myrtle Beach area boasts numerous paid attractions, balancing cost is key for frequent outings. One standout free gem is Vereen Historical Memorial Gardens, open to all visitors at no charge.
Ideal for outdoor enthusiasts, this 114-acre park sits at the northern tip of the Grand Strand in Little River. It features well-maintained trails and boardwalks winding through stunning salt marshes and small islands, plus a charming gazebo with panoramic views of the Intracoastal Waterway. The breathtaking scenery alone makes it worthwhile, with abundant wildlife sightings as a bonus.
Dog owners will appreciate the pet-friendly policy—leashed dogs are welcome, provided you clean up after them. Picnic tables and swings enhance the experience, making it easy to linger for hours with a packed lunch.
History enthusiasts will find rich heritage here. The gardens occupy part of a historic 400-acre Vereen family plantation, where President George Washington stayed overnight during his 1791 Southern Tour. Hosted by Jeremiah Vereen, Washington toured the property. Though the original house is gone, the onsite family cemetery holds 350 years of Vereen ancestors, including Revolutionary and Civil War veterans. Learn more at the adjacent C.B. Berry Community and Historical Center.
Open during daylight hours, the park is conveniently located off Highway 179 in Little River—about one mile south of the SC/NC border, directly across from the South Carolina Welcome Center.
