Memorial Day Weekend 2020 in Myrtle Beach: Essential Traffic Plans and Safety Guidelines
As communities reopen, Myrtle Beach anticipates a surge of visitors for Memorial Day weekend. The City of Myrtle Beach has introduced targeted rules and a comprehensive plan to promote safety, smooth traffic flow, and enjoyable experiences for all.
City of Myrtle Beach Traffic Congestion Management Plan
The City has implemented a three-part Traffic Congestion Management Plan to prioritize driver and pedestrian safety, improve emergency response times, and avoid gridlock.
- Part One: Traffic control devices are pre-staged at key intersections. If congestion exceeds capacity, trained officers will deploy these devices to redirect traffic to less crowded routes.
- Part Two: South Carolina Highway Patrol officers will monitor eight critical intersections during peak hours, directing traffic to maintain flow and prevent backups.
- Part Three: Starting Friday, May 22 at 6 a.m., Ocean Blvd. will be southbound-only for motorists; northbound lanes reserved for emergency vehicles. Pedestrian barricades along the curbs encourage crosswalk use and deter roadway walking. Visit mdwtrafficmap.com for details.
Golf Cart and Moped Restrictions
Golf carts are banned on Ocean Blvd. south of 29th Ave. N. from 12:01 a.m. Friday until traffic devices are removed. Mopeds are prohibited from 12:01 a.m. to 8 a.m. Friday, and nightly from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. Friday through Sunday, until Monday's removal.
