Ultimate Dog-Friendly Guide to the Outer Banks: Beaches, Activities, Dining & Lodging
Nothing beats a beach vacation with your dog: warm sands, refreshing ocean waves, clear skies, and your loyal companion by your side. Last month, we took our dog Navy on her first trip to the Outer Banks (OBX), sharing the joy our family has experienced there for years.
The Outer Banks is a 200-mile (320 km) chain of barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina and southeastern Virginia. On our trip, we explored the popular pet-friendly beaches of Duck, Kitty Hawk, Nags Head, and Kill Devil Hills.
This guide is divided into outdoor activities, dining, and lodging, featuring first-hand experiences with Navy and recommendations from OBX local Oliver the Doodle.
Outdoor Fun
The Outer Banks boasts highly dog-friendly beaches, though rules vary by town. Visit the official Outer Banks website for details. We chose Nags Head beach, where leashed dogs (max 10 feet) are welcome year-round.

Oliver recommends Jockey's Ridge State Park, home to the East Coast's tallest natural sand dune. Pets are allowed on a leash (max 6 feet); please clean up after them. He loves racing up and down the dunes each summer.
Kayaking is a highlight—Kitty Hawk Watersports rents kayaks and stand-up paddleboards and welcomes dogs. Navy wore her life jacket and splashed between kayaks, loving every minute.

We discovered the shaded, fenced Satterfield Landing Road Dog Park in Nags Head via Google Maps. It has separate areas for large and small dogs, with water and waste bags provided. The sand-mulch surface keeps paws clean.

Kitty Hawk is home to the Wright Brothers National Memorial, where the brothers tested gliders starting in 1900 due to ideal winds. Leashed pets can hike the outer trails—we plan to visit next time!
Dining
Mulligan's Grille
4005 S Croatan Highway
Nags Head, NC 27959
Most OBX spots have dog-friendly patios, but Mulligan's stands out with a dedicated dog menu. Humans enjoy fresh seafood and burgers. Dogs get complimentary water and options like grilled chicken with brown rice (Navy's 10/10 favorite). They have pet-specific patios.

Booty Treats Ice Cream & Shave Ice
2600 S. Virginia Dare Trail
Nags Head, NC 27959
1209 S. Croatan Hwy
Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948
Oliver loves the dog-friendly patio and pup treats at the register. Perfect for post-beach desserts.
Lodging
We stayed at family-owned home in Nags Head, rented via Village Realty OBX. Many pet-friendly vacation rentals are available throughout OBX.
