6th Annual Outer Banks Veterans Week: Honoring Heroes November 1-11, 2018
The Outer Banks' rich culture is deeply rooted in our community's profound respect for those who serve. Join us for the 6th annual Outer Banks Veterans Week, November 1-11, 2018, celebrating veterans and their families through the arts. The event kicks off November 1 at 6 p.m. in Downtown Manteo, hosted by the Town of Manteo.
Enjoy numerous veteran celebrations from Corolla to Hatteras and points in between. This initiative is supported by the North Carolina Arts Council (a division of the Department of Natural & Cultural Resources), Outer Banks Visitors Bureau, Dare County Veterans Advisory Council, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10950.
Catch live music from Sassagrass, an eclectic acoustic bluegrass band, on Friday, November 10 at Pamlico Jack's. The free show starts at 9 p.m., hosted by the Outer Banks Marathon and Dare County Arts Council.
The Outer Banks Veterans Writing Project marks its 6th anniversary on November 10-11, 2018. This free two-day workshop at the UNC Coastal Studies Institute in Wanchese welcomes beginner and experienced writers. Led by Ron Capps, founder and director of the National Veterans Writing Project, it accommodates up to 25 participants. Dare County Arts Council invites former and current service members, plus their families from North Carolina, Virginia, and surrounding areas.
Explore the Outer Banks' storied military history: Lifesaving Service surfmen at Kill Devil Hills aided the Wright Brothers' experiments; Army Brigadier General Billy Mitchell demonstrated air power by sinking battleships off Hatteras in 1923; and during World War II, the Navy, Coast Guard, and Civil Air Patrol defended our shores and Allied shipping from submarine attacks.
