Behind the Mask: Exclusive Interview with ASU's Iconic Sparky Mascot
When imagining Arizona State University (ASU), Sparky immediately comes to mind as our beloved mascot. His electrifying pre-game football introductions rank among the best in college sports. Beyond the field, Sparky embodies the spirit of Tempe, delighting fans at games and bringing joy to children during hospital visits.
I recently had the privilege of interviewing the ASU student who brings Sparky to life. Portraying a college mascot is akin to joining an elite group of performers, much like superheroes whose true identities remain hidden. To respect this tradition, Sparky's identity stays confidential—though I can confirm they are an ASU student.
This dedicated individual has embodied Sparky for four years, starting as a freshman. In high school, they were renowned for school spirit. During an ASU basketball game, they won a push-up contest against Sparky, caught the coach's attention, and were invited to try out after sharing contact information.
Sparky's tryout was rigorous: completing as many push-ups as possible in one minute (they achieved 65, surpassing my personal best of 56); forming the letters A-S-U with their body; and finally donning the costume for evaluation at a volleyball game. Thankfully, they aced it, becoming our Sparky.
Sparky cherishes the role for many reasons, with football games at the top—especially the adrenaline-fueled tunnel entrance to AC/DC's 'Thunderstruck' alongside the team. "There's no better entrance in the Pac-12," they shared. Yet, the true highlight is visiting sick children in hospitals. Seeing a child's face light up and shaking their hand delivers unmatched fulfillment: "It makes me feel like I've done something truly worthwhile."
