Discover Earth and Space Wonders at ASU's Gallery of Scientific Exploration

I recently enjoyed a captivating afternoon at Arizona State University's (ASU) Gallery of Scientific Exploration on the Tempe campus. This innovative space educates visitors about earth and space sciences through immersive digital media, interactive exhibits, public lectures in a high-definition theater, and glass-enclosed research labs where you can observe scientists in action.

Right in the lobby, a detailed model of NASA's Mars rover Curiosity greets visitors. Another highlight is the EarthScope exhibit, which simulates earthquakes—our group of eight jumped together to register a significant spike on the interactive seismograph.

Upstairs, a stunning collection of meteorites from sites worldwide showcases ASU's renowned holdings, ranging from tiny fragments to large specimens. This display feels especially timely amid recent cosmic events like near-Earth flybys and the Russian meteor incident.

The crown jewel is the Marston Exploration Theater's 3D planetarium-style shows, far surpassing traditional dome planetariums. This IMAX-like venue features amphitheater seating, a massive front screen, and 3D glasses provided at entry.

Choose from two mesmerizing presentations: To the Edge of the Universe and Everything in Between, a narrated voyage from Earth's orbit to cosmic background radiation; or Undiscovered Worlds, delving into exoplanet research. I experienced the former and was enthralled as we zoomed from our planet—shrinking to a speck—through galaxies, enveloped in stereographic 3D visuals. The accessible narration made complex concepts engaging, even if some stretched beyond my grasp.

The return journey, sans narration, let us savor the drift back to our 'big blue marble' in silent awe—a universal favorite.

Add the Gallery and Marston shows to your summer must-do list. Located in ISTB IV on ASU Tempe campus. Gallery hours: Mon-Fri 8 a.m.-5 p.m. year-round; Saturdays during shows.
