Whale Watching, Luxurious Haciendas & Stunning Infinity Pools: The Best of Cabo San Lucas
Did you know the lagoons along Baja's Pacific Coast and the Sea of Cortez boast the highest concentration of whales per square mile? Cabo San Lucas is a prime whale-watching destination, especially from January to March, when you can witness the majestic mating behaviors of these incredible creatures.

Whales migrate to Cabo for the warm waters and the Sea of Cortez's high salt content, which provides natural pain relief for mothers during birth—imagine delivering a 30-50 ton calf. The salt also enhances buoyancy, helping newborns learn to swim more easily.
Having joined numerous whale-watching tours, this Cabo experience stood out due to the extraordinary density of whales in a compact area. We observed mothers with calves, multiple breaches, and competitive males vying for mates.

Our Zodiac approached two male humpback whales competing for a female. Unlike aggressive encounters I've seen elsewhere (like in California's Channel Islands), these displayed strength through tail thrashing, slaps, and breaches—impressive courtship without harm.
The captain enhanced our tour by lowering a hydrophone to capture whale communications, playing a mesmerizing recording from a prior trip. (View a short clip in the video below.)
Choose operators with respectful, expert guides. Cabo Adventures impressed with their knowledgeable crew and safe distancing from wildlife. However, I was disappointed to learn they also offer captive dolphin swims at their Los Cabos site— a practice at odds with their ethical wild encounters.
Top Beachfront Stays in Cabo San Lucas
Beyond the vibrant bars of Cabo Wabo and Squid Roe lies a serene desert oasis. Expecting lively parties from San Diego, my stay at Hacienda Encantada revealed peaceful luxury instead.

This oceanfront gem, dubbed Los Cabos' best-kept secret, features hacienda-style suites adorned with vibrant Mexican art. Perched on a peninsula tip, every view—from Pacific Ocean to Sea of Cortez—is dramatic.

My expansive veranda, spanning living room to bedroom, offered breathtaking vistas. Spotting whale spouts, breaches, and tail slaps over morning coffee was unforgettable.
The infinity pool with swim-up bar overlooking the Sea of Cortez was pure bliss.

On the all-inclusive plan, enjoy unlimited dining and drinks, including a stocked mini-fridge. All five resort restaurants delivered exceptional meals—from poolside sushi to a weekly cooking class where I mastered seabass ceviche and shrimp empanadas.

Ideal for tranquil escapes; for party vibes near the action, sister property Marina Fiesta offers similar elegance in a prime location.
