Discover Tempe's Premier Distilleries: Adventurous Stills and Arizona Distilling Co.

Written by Angela Muniz

Arizona's thriving wine and craft beer scenes have paved the way for its distilleries, where small-batch spirits are crafting the state's next artisanal wave. In Tempe, two standout distilleries—just three miles apart—offer an effortless day of spirit exploration. Their tasting rooms, guided tours, and expert craft cocktails provide an immersive look into this dynamic industry.

Adventurous Stills

2215 E. Fifth St., Tempe | 480-292-8770

Adventurous Stills embodies its bold name. Founded by three outdoor enthusiasts, the team infused their love of exploration into distilling. They crowdfunded the project and hand-built their stills and equipment. Production began in 2015, with the tasting room opening in Tempe's industrial district in 2017. Their gin, vodka, whiskey, rum, and bourbon draw names from iconic Arizona hiking trails. They also feature a "Taste of Arizona" flight showcasing local spirits. The tasting room operates Thursdays through Saturdays, with hourly tours on Fridays and Saturdays.

Arizona Distilling Co.

601 W. University Dr., Tempe | 602-391-3889

Since 2013, Arizona Distilling Co. has earned accolades for its gin, vodka, and Copper City Bourbon—Arizona's first legal whiskey post-Prohibition. Whiskey fans will love the Desert Durum Wheat, crafted from local grains. Relocating to a larger space in 2018, the distillery now features the "Old Walrus" tasting room and lounge, honoring Arizona's first governor, George W.P. Hunt, whose portrait graces the bar. Enjoy spirit flights, cocktails by expert bartender Micah Olsen, and a new bites menu. Open Wednesday through Sunday; reserve tours and tastings 24 hours ahead for Saturdays.
