Update: March 12, 2020, 9:15 p.m. – The City of Tempe cancelled all public events, including African Fest USA and most public meetings, through April 2020. For details, visit the City of Tempe website.
Originally scheduled for March 28, 2020, African Fest USA in Tempe, Arizona, promised an immersive celebration of African heritage. This event aimed to unite African communities from Tempe and nearby areas, showcasing their rich culture, cuisine, traditions, and lifestyles. Visitors could have enjoyed international guests, fashion shows, global music, and Arizona's pleasant weather at Kiwanis Park from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
To learn more, we interviewed Anibal Abayneh, General Manager of Cafe Lalibela and Lalibela Wholesale Foods in Tempe, and producer of African Fest USA.
Why did you start African Fest USA?
African Fest USA was launched to provide Arizona's African community a platform to share their culture, food, art, dance, music, and lifestyle. It bridges gaps between communities that rarely interact, while educating others and countering misconceptions that Africa is solely a continent of developing nations with little to offer.
Our vision: Foster an accurate, inspiring understanding of Africa's diverse talents, resources, and diaspora.
With Cafe Lalibela in Tempe, was hosting here important?
Tempe, like Africa, is often overlooked amid Phoenix's many cultural events. Hosting here distinguishes us and brings unique programming to this side of the valley. Tempe is home to my family, and we're proud to host in a community that embraces cultural diversity.
What could attendees expect? Any surprises?
Expect stunning displays of art, crafts, music, dance, fashion, and food. Gain a true appreciation for Africa and its people, beyond media stereotypes. This year, we planned an African village replica, spotlighting Ghana.
Performer schedule?
The festival program guide listed all acts, set times, and locations within the grounds.
Beyond Ethiopian cuisine, what else?
Sample Ghanaian, Nigerian, Cameroonian, South African, Sudanese, and more.
Anything else to share?
African Fest USA welcomes all cultures to learn about Africa's offerings as the world's second-largest continent. Discover shared similarities—we're all one global family.
