Top Activities at Tempe Town Lake: Kayaking, SUP Yoga, Fishing, Biking & More
Tempe Town Lake offers endless outdoor adventures right in the heart of the city. This unexpected urban oasis spans two miles and attracts visitors year-round, from winter to summer. Note: Swimming is never permitted.
Situated at the northwest corner of Mill Avenue and Rio Salado Parkway, Tempe Town Lake is one of Arizona's most popular tourist destinations, far more than a scenic drive-by on the 202 freeway.
Rent a Boat
Boat Rentals of America at Tempe Beach Park on the south shore provides a variety of watercraft rentals.
For groups, try the donut boat accommodating up to 10 people at $100/hour—an affordable option when shared. It features a central round table ideal for food and drinks and is pet-friendly.
Opt for the 16-foot electric pontoon for 8 people starting at $75/hour. Popular choices include kayaks (single or double sit-on-top models) and stand-up paddleboards (SUPs). New additions: charming Swan, Duck, and Dragon pedal boats.
Stand-up paddleboards are easier than they appear, thanks to traction grips. A full list of rentals and rates is available on their site.
Stand-Up Paddleboard Yoga
Experience SUP yoga: groups paddle out for yoga poses and meditation on the water. Poses feel uniquely challenging—a sense of humor helps! Check the City of Tempe website; search "yoga" in activities for schedules.
Go for a Run
Land lovers can jog the 5-mile paved path around the lake. The pedestrian bridge at Tempe Center for the Arts links north and south shores. Cross back via stairs near the southbound Mill Avenue bridge to complete the loop along Rio Salado Parkway.
Enjoy a Bike Ride
Prefer cycling? Rent bikes from The Bicycle Cellar at Fifth St. and Forest Ave. in Downtown Tempe's Transportation Center, or grab electric scooters in Tempe Beach Park and downtown. Lakeside rides in the desert make Tempe unique.
Go Fishing
Anglers catch trout (stocked November-February), bass, catfish, and sunfish year-round. Ages 14+ need an Arizona Fishing License, available at Arizona Game and Fish offices or sporting goods stores.
