Crystal Cove Cottages: Historic Beachfront Retreats in California State Park
With snow still blanketing the ground, a quick internet search can lead down a delightful rabbit hole of travel dreams. For me, it always circles back to Crystal Cove Cottages—a cherished spot I've revisited in my mind since discovering it over a decade ago during a Los Angeles trip.
These iconic beachfront cottages have graced California's coastline for more than 60 years. In the 1920s, Hollywood filmmakers used the area as a stand-in for Tahiti and Hawaii, leaving behind sets that local families repurposed into rustic, albeit unofficial, beach shacks. By the 1930s and 1940s, 46 cottages dotted the shore, serving as summer escapes for working families. Stories abound of barefoot kids playing all day and evening trumpet calls signaling happy hour—a real-life blend of Gilligan’s Island and Swiss Family Robinson.

The land eventually transferred to California State Parks. By the 1980s and 1990s, many cottages had deteriorated, prompting a 2001 preservation plan. This initiative safeguards over three miles of rugged coastline, the remaining structures, and 2,400 acres of wilderness.
Today, the Crystal Cove Conservancy has meticulously restored 24 original cottages to their historic charm. They're available for year-round rentals directly on the beach or perched on ocean-view bluffs. For day visitors, The Beachcomber Cafe offers beachfront dining. Crystal Cove State Park lies just one hour south of Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).
Whether beach-level or bluff-top, these cottages deliver unparalleled vistas no fortune like a Getty or Carnegie could surpass.
