10 Expert Tips to Maximize Your NYC Pride March Experience

  1. Refer to it as a march, not a parade. As explained by GMHC staffer and former grand marshal Krisha Stone, NYC Pride is called a march to emphasize that the fight for full LGBT equality continues. It will remain a march until those rights are fully realized.
  2. You don't need to arrive at dawn for prime viewing spots. By mid-afternoon, spaces often open up in areas like 5th Avenue in Flatiron or the route's end at 23rd Street and 7th Avenue.
  3. Plan for a longer event this year. The supersized march is expected to conclude around 9:30 PM—nearly four hours later than usual. Pace yourself to enjoy the full experience.
  4. Avoid cars and taxis in lower Manhattan. Expect severe gridlock. Opt for the subway and exit at Union Square (less crowded than Christopher Street or 8th Avenue), walk, or use Citi Bike if you're adventurous.
  5. Utilize LinkNYC terminals along sidewalks for free, high-speed Wi-Fi and USB charging ports. Bring your own charging cable.
  6. Carry cash, especially small bills. Street vendors are cash-only, ATMs will be overwhelmed, and you may want to tip standout costumed marchers. Prepare in advance.
  7. Seek out the WorldPride Mural Project at 7th Avenue and West 22nd Street on the route, and other locations citywide. These commissioned works by 50 global artists, including D*Face and Mac C, celebrate Pride's diversity.
  8. Bring a reusable water bottle. Refill at fountains in Washington Square Park near the route—save money and the environment while staying hydrated in the sun.
  9. Don't stay on the sidelines. Though floats are full, approach intersections where police pause the march for pedestrian crossings. A polite smile might let you join the marchers.
  10. Explore Pride beyond Manhattan. While NYC's is the largest globally, borough-specific events shine too. Highlight: Harlem Pride's 10th anniversary on June 29, with two stages, free entry, and host Dominique Jackson.
