Discover Shenzhen: China's Thriving Creative Capital and Top Design Destinations
Just three decades ago, Shenzhen was a sleepy fishing village bordering Hong Kong in mainland China. Today, it stands as one of China's premier economic powerhouses in the bustling Pearl River Delta, home to over 12 million residents.
China's wealthiest city, Shenzhen rose to prominence as the world's manufacturing hub after becoming a special economic zone in the late 1980s. Over the past decade, it has evolved into a global tech innovation center, hosting some of China's most cutting-edge companies.

Shenzhen has also emerged as a vibrant creative hub. Designated a UNESCO City of Design in 2008, it has solidified its shift from industrial giant to innovative cultural capital.
Perfectly suited for a day trip from Hong Kong or as a standalone destination in mainland China, Shenzhen offers world-class design experiences. We've curated the city's top design venues, from cultural landmarks to boutique gems.
Design Society
In December 2017, the opening of Design Society elevated Shenzhen's design profile. This striking white-and-glass landmark in the revitalizing Shekou port area was designed by Pritzker Prize-winning Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki. Developed in partnership with London's Victoria & Albert Museum and China Merchants Group, it features galleries, artist studios, a spacious public outdoor area, a gift shop, and a café.

More than a gallery, Design Society serves as a catalyst for China's design scene. 'Design Society will connect China's creative industries to the world,' states director Ole Bouman, aligning perfectly with Shenzhen's vision as a global art city.
Its manicured harborfront park offers one of Shenzhen's most serene spots to unwind, with stunning views of the rapidly evolving skyline across from Hong Kong.
OCT Loft
Like many global cities, Shenzhen has repurposed historic industrial sites into thriving art districts. OCT Loft in Nanshan exemplifies this, with palm-lined avenues, a relaxed vibe, and air-conditioned galleries ideal for exploring China's contemporary grassroots art.

This expansive complex of colorful former factories hosts grand galleries, intimate design boutiques (visit IM Loft Shop and quirky Incover), lively restaurants popular with locals—like Malaysian Champor Champor and artsy My Coffee—plus patisseries. Evenings come alive at spots like Penny Black Jazz Bar with live music.
Anchoring the area is the OCT Art Terminal, the pioneering gallery since 2005, showcasing Chinese and international works in its vast warehouse. Smaller galleries line the alleys off Enping Jie.

On the first and third weekends monthly, T-Street Creative Market buzzes with local artisans offering unique items like custom smartphone cases, jewelry, calligraphy, and vintage finds.
Nearby, a quick taxi ride away, the OCT Creative Exhibition Center—resembling a futuristic spaceship—has hosted major shows, including TeamLab's immersive exhibit in 2017.
In Shenzhen's soaring Futian business district, the Museum of Urban Art and Contemporary Planning (MOCAPE), designed by renowned Austrian firm Coop Himmelblau, anchors the new Futian Cultural District beside the Children's Palace.

Opened in 2017, this architectural marvel merges the Planning Exhibition and Museum of Contemporary Art under a dramatic chrome curve. Inside, a mirrored cloud bubble in the entrance hall beckons for photos. Exhibits on Chinese sculpture are interactive and expansive, though spaciously arranged.
Muji Hotel
Iconic Japanese design brand Muji selected Shenzhen for its debut hotel in late 2017, making it a must-stay for design enthusiasts.

Nestled in the sleek UpperHills mall in Futian, this elegant low-rise features 79 timber-accented rooms, China's largest Muji store below, and a ground-floor diner with Japanese staples. Note: It's a hotspot for influencers.
Make it Happen
Reach Shenzhen in about an hour by subway from central Hong Kong or high-speed train from Guangzhou. As part of mainland China, a Chinese visa is required; day visas for Shenzhen are available at Luohu border for eligible passports.
