The Rise of Solo Travel: Why More Travelers Are Embracing Solo Adventures
Traveling with friends on a group holiday or escaping romantically with a partner offers exciting options. However, a recent YouGov survey commissioned by Agoda reveals a surge in solo travel, as more people seek relaxation and immersion in new lifestyles.

The 'Solo Travel Trends 2018' study polled travelers from Asia, the USA, Europe, and Australia on ideal solo destinations and motivations. Globally, relaxation emerged as the top reason, followed by escaping routine and discovering new cultures.
For Asian travelers, Bangkok led, with Kuala Lumpur, Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong, Ho Chi Minh City, and Manila close behind. Travelers from the USA, Europe, and Australia favored London, Tokyo, Sydney, Melbourne, New York, Bangkok, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas. Notably, all top picks are vibrant cosmopolitan hubs brimming with attractions, nightlife, shopping, and dining options. Tokyo stood out as a universal favorite across regions.

Demographics varied by region: Asian solo travelers skew younger (18-26), while Europeans and Americans are often 39+. The latter groups also tend to take longer solo trips.

Additional research shows 60% of solo travelers are in relationships or married, yet crave independent adventures. Cuba is emerging as a hotspot for solo female travelers.
