Staying Fit at the 2017 Texas State Fair: Smart Food Choices
Healthy Options at the 2017 Texas State Fair
While the fair is famed for its fried fare, you can still enjoy tasty, nutritious snacks without the batter.
An oversized turkey leg remains a must‑have, and a juicy sausage on a stick offers a lean protein alternative. Don’t miss the roasted corn from Darn Good Corn just outside the main Midway entrance – simply request no butter for a cleaner bite.
If a Fletcher’s corny dog tempts you, try the turkey and veggie versions. For Tex‑Mex flavors, the Midway’s chicken quesadillas or vegetarian burrito are excellent, low‑fat options.
Take a Break at the Tower Building
The indoor Tower Building hosts a variety of concessionaires, making it a sun‑free spot to refuel. Choose from New Orleans classics like red beans and rice or seafood gumbo, or lighter fare such as chicken salad or tuna salad sandwiches. Finish with a refreshing fruit drink – horchata, lemon, or pineapple – to keep hydration on point.
Fruit Is Everywhere
Start with a mango on a stick, a State Fair favorite that’s easy to eat while playing ring toss. A traditional fruit cup brimming with watermelon, honeydew, cantaloupe, jicama, pineapple, coconut, and a splash of lime juice and cayenne pepper adds a savory twist.
Prefer fruit in liquid form? Head to the Wine Garden, where you can sample from more than 40 wineries while enjoying live jazz and blues. Wine in moderation is often cited for heart health.
Get Your Steps In
Our half‑day walk around Fair Park covered roughly 10,250 steps in about three and a half hours—slightly above the USDA’s 10,000‑step daily recommendation for adults—and it’s far more enjoyable than a stroll around the block.
