October in Santa Fe: A Perfect Time to Visit
October offers ideal conditions for exploring Santa Fe, New Mexico. With cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, and stunning fall foliage, it's prime time for the city's vibrant festivals and events. Discover the highlights below.
October arrives in full golden glory as aspen trees display their glowing fall colors, usually through the middle of the month.
Lights! Camera! Film Festival Action!
Santa Fe's deep connection to film makes it a natural host for the Santa Fe Independent Film Festival. Launched in 2009, it has grown into New Mexico's largest event of its kind, screening over 100 films across five days. Past editions honored luminaries like Chris Eyre (Smoke Signals, Skins), Rudolfo Anaya (Bless Me, Ultima), and Judy Blume (Tiger Eyes), with sold-out screenings at the Lensic Performing Arts Center and red-carpet glamour. Recognized by Moviemaker Magazine as one of the '25 Coolest General Film Festivals' and '50 Festivals Worth the Entry Fee in 2014,' it's a must-attend.

A Harvest Bounty
The aroma of roasting chiles fills the October air, perfectly complementing harvest celebrations. Join the Harvest Festival at Rancho de las Golondrinas on October 3–4, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Watch villagers crush grapes by foot for wine, learn to string chile ristras, make tortillas, and bake bread—hands-on traditions passed down through generations.

Up, Up And Away
For over four decades, the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta draws global visitors during the first week of October (October 3–11). Just a short drive from Santa Fe, witness the morning glow and mass ascension of 500+ colorful balloons. Capture the magic with your camera—one of the world's most photographed events—then return to Santa Fe for dining and relaxation. Tickets: (855) 725-1824 or online; available at the gate.

Three Studio Tours
October's studio tours combine art discovery with scenic fall drives from Santa Fe. The Galisteo Studio Tour showcases photography, paintings, pottery, jewelry, and more amid ancient cottonwoods. El Rito Studio Tour features blacksmithing, fiber arts, and pottery in a historic Spanish settlement. Abiquiú Studio Tour visits over 70 artists' studios, including Georgia O’Keeffe's former home. All run October 10–12.
