Walt Disney World's 50th Anniversary: Top 8 Must-See New Experiences
Walt Disney World opened its gates on October 1, 1971, fulfilling founder Walt Disney's vision for an East Coast counterpart to Disneyland. While Disneyland in Anaheim spanned 160 acres, the 28,000 acres purchased near Orlando, Florida, provided vast room for growth and innovation.

Today, Walt Disney World attracts 58 million visitors annually from around the globe to its four iconic parks: Magic Kingdom (1971), EPCOT (Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, 1982), Hollywood Studios (formerly Disney-MGM Studios, 1989), and Animal Kingdom (1998). Timeless classics endure, but the 50th anniversary introduces exciting new experiences across the resort.
France Pavilion Expansion

EPCOT's beloved France pavilion in World Showcase has nearly doubled in size. The highlight is Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, a family-friendly 4D ride based on the award-winning 2007 Pixar film. Guests shrink to rat size for a multisensory dash through Gusteau’s Paris restaurant. Complementing it is La Crêperie de Paris, offering authentic French crepes, sweets, and ciders.
New Nighttime Spectaculars
Disney elevates evening entertainment with two groundbreaking shows. EPCOT's Harmonious dazzles with pyrotechnics, massive LED screens, synchronized fountains, and 200 global performers interpreting Disney songs in 12+ languages—the largest nighttime spectacular in Disney history. At Magic Kingdom, Disney Enchantment features fireworks, an original Grammy winner-composed song, and immersive projections from Cinderella Castle to Main Street, U.S.A.
Exclusive 50th Anniversary Merchandise
Collectors rejoice: Five new collections launch for the jubilee, including apparel, plush toys, housewares, and collectibles. Debuting October 1 are the Vault Collection (retro designs), Celebration Collection, and Disney Castle Collection. EARidescent Collection (shimmering fashions) and Luxe Logo Collection follow by early November.
Elevated Dining Experiences
Walt Disney World's Space 220 Restaurant at EPCOT's Mission: SPACE lifts diners 220 miles above Earth for meals with stunning virtual views. This partnership with Patina Restaurant Group exemplifies the resort's 150+ new menu items, such as Walt’s Chili Cheese Fries at Animal Kingdom, Mission to Mars Burger at Magic Kingdom's Cosmic Ray’s, EARidescent Croissant Doughnut at EPCOT, and Glimmer and Shimmer Pineapple Mousse at Hollywood Studios.
Disney and Cirque du Soleil Unite

A Disney first: Drawn to Life, a family show blending Disney Imagineering and Cirque du Soleil. An animator's table becomes a canvas for a girl's Disney memories through acrobatics and visuals. Premiering November 18 at Disney Springs; tickets available now.
Resort Refresh
Original 1971 resorts Disney’s Contemporary Resort and Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort get 50th anniversary updates. Contemporary's tower rooms evoke Tomorrowland with Pixar’s The Incredibles themes, a modern art lobby, and rebranded Steakhouse 71. Polynesian rooms feature Moana-inspired Pacific Ocean palettes (AAA Four Diamond property).
Golden Character Sculptures
The Disney Fab 50 Character Collection honors the anniversary with 50 golden statues across parks: Miguel and Dante (Coco) at EPCOT; BB-8 and R2-D2 at Hollywood Studios; Simba, Timon, and Pumbaa at Animal Kingdom; Mickey and Minnie at Magic Kingdom.
Aerial Kite Performances
Animal Kingdom's Disney Kite Tails showcases massive 3D kites (up to 30 feet) of Disney animals like Simba, Baloo, and King Louie dancing over water to classic tunes, with performers displaying windcatchers multiple times daily at Discovery River Theater.
Plan your Walt Disney World trip: Travelzoo members save on 2022 tickets, but book park reservations amid reduced capacity. Masks required indoors; safety protocols apply. The 18-month celebration runs through March 2023.
