Louisiana Rice: From Farm to Table – A Behind-the-Scenes Adventure
Last summer, I took my family on an unforgettable outdoor adventure at Grosse Savanne Eco-Tours, where we witnessed baby birds nesting in the rookeries—one of nature's most precious sights.

Arriving at the field office in Bell City, Louisiana, our guide asked if we'd like to start with a truck tour of the rice fields. Sweet Lake Land & Oil is one of Louisiana's largest rice producers.

Eager for the boat ride to see the nestlings, I deferred to my husband's curiosity about rice farming—a topic I knew little about beyond its role in cuisine.
From a prior visit to Farmers Rice Mill, I knew Louisiana ranks among the top U.S. rice producers, vital to the nation's food supply.
As a Cajun cuisine lover, rice is essential in our dishes: gumbo, jambalaya, étouffée, boudin—it's all delicious, cher!
We explored the irrigation system—crucial for rice growth—and discussed pumps, harvesting, and distribution with our guide.

Doug Miller, operations manager at Sweet Lake Land & Oil (parent company of Grosse Savanne Eco-Tours), explained that Acadians planted rice in South Louisiana, perfectly suited to our hot, humid climate and wetland soils.
In Sulphur, visit Creole Nature Trail Adventure Point for a rice industry exhibit next to the boudin stuffer. Pick up free recipes from local restaurants.
