Top Spring Birding Hotspots in Southwest Louisiana: Expert Guide (Part 2)
Growing up in the wetlands of Southwest Louisiana, I've developed a deep knowledge of prime birding locations, thanks to my family's boat-accessible hunting camp in the marshes of Cameron Parish. For newcomers, accessing these spots can be tricky—but I've got you covered with my top recommendations for exceptional spring birding.

Follow the Creole Nature Trail All-American Road, ranked among the nation's Top 10 birdwatching destinations. Begin at Creole Nature Trail Adventure Point: grab a Birding Guide with maps and checklists, or download the Creole Nature Trail app for a guided tour through Louisiana’s Outback.

Travel south on LA-27 to Sabine National Wildlife Refuge and explore the Wetland Walkway. Amid salt grass and cattails, scan the marsh for neotropical songbirds with your binoculars.

Next, head to LA-82 for Peveto Woods Bird Sanctuary, a haven for birds fresh from crossing the Gulf of Mexico. Return to LA-27 for Pintail Wildlife Drive in Cameron Prairie Wildlife Refuge—a 3-mile loop teeming with alligators, turtles, otters, rails, raptors, and waterfowl along sunlit ponds. Stay alert on the road and plan frequent stops to avoid mishaps.

Other must-visits along the Creole Nature Trail include Sabine National Wildlife Refuge's Blue Goose Trail for songbirds, Cameron Jetties Fishing Pier or Cameron Ferry for pelicans and gulls, and any of Cameron Parish's seven beaches for shorebirds.

Whether you're a seasoned birder or beginner, spring birding in Southwest Louisiana offers unmatched beauty, accessibility, and diversity. Grab your binoculars and head south!
